Microsoft Reference Setup Troubleshooter

Macromedia Director may not be installed correctly, or one of its components may be missing or damaged.

To resolve this issue, use the following methods:

Rename the Msvcrt40.dll File

To rename all copies of the Msvcrt40.dll file on the computer, follow these steps:

  1. Restart Windows in Safe mode. To do so, follow the steps in the appropriate section below:

      Microsoft Windows 95

    • Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.

      Microsoft Windows 98

    • Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.

  2. When Windows starts in Safe Mode, click OK.

  3. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

  4. In the Named box, type "msvcrt40.dll" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now.

  5. In the list of found files, right-click the Msvcrt40.dll file, and then click Rename.

  6. Type "msvcrt40.old" (without quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each copy of the Msvcrt40.dll file in the list of found files.

  8. Close the Find: Files Named Msvcrt40.dll window.

  9. Restart the computer.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next section.

Remove and Reinstall Shockwave Director Components

To remove and reinstall Shockwave Director components, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel. Double-click Internet.

  2. On the General tab (Internet Explorer 4.0) or on the Navigation tab (Internet Explorer 3.x), click Clear History, and then click Yes.

  3. If you are using Internet Explorer version 4.0, on the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.

    If you are using Internet Explorer version 3.0, on the Advanced tab, click Settings, click Empty Folder under Temporary Internet Files, and then click Yes.

  4. Click OK until you return to Windows.

  5. Click Start, and then click Run.

  6. In the Open box, type "cookies" (without quotation marks), and then click OK.

  7. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  8. On the File menu, click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to send the selected files to the Recycle Bin, click Yes.

  9. Click Start, and then click Run.

  10. If you are using Windows 98, in the Open box, type "downloaded program files" (including the quotation marks), and then click OK.

    If you are using any other version of Windows, in the Open box, type "occache" (without quotation marks), and then click OK.

  11. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  12. On the File menu, click Remove Program File. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the selected files, click Yes.

  13. Insert the Encarta 99 Disc 1 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Encarta 99 from starting automatically.

  14. Click Start, and then click Run.

  15. In the Open box, type the following line and then click OK

       <drive>:\aamsstp

    where <drive> is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.

  16. Double-click Axdist.exe.

  17. Double-click Swiex6.exe.

  18. Close all open windows, and then attempt to start Encarta 99 Encyclopedia.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next section.

Remove and Reinstall Encarta 99 Encyclopedia

To remove and reinstall Encarta 99 Encyclopedia, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Encarta 99 Encyclopedia, and then click Add/Remove.

  4. Click Automatic, click Next, and then click Finish.

  5. When you are prompted to remove shared files, click Yes.

  6. Click OK until you return to Control Panel.

  7. Close Control Panel.

  8. Delete the folder in which Encarta 99 is installed. By default, Encarta 99 is installed in the following folder:

       C:\Program Files\Microsoft Reference\Encarta Encyclopedia

    For information about how to delete folders, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "deleting" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the "deleting files or folders" or "deleting files, folders" topic.

  9. Reinstall Encarta 99 Encyclopedia.
